The Difference Between Staging and Decorating

If you have paid any attention to my blog posts, then you would know that I love to write posts about decorating and staging. Those two topics probably take up the majority of what articles I love to read and base my posts on. But it can be hard for some people to identify what makes these two actions, the act of staging and the act of decorating, so different. And, don’t be mistaken, they are very different. The article I will be referencing in this blog post and linking at the bottom points out the major core variance between staging and decorating. Make sure you check out the original article but I will be summarizing it here to the best of my ability.

Staging your home is not at all about personal style while decorating your home largely relies on personal style to inform the process. This is because when you are selling your home you are not trying to sell something that is “yours” but rather something that anyone can step into and call their own. You are selling a lifestyle and a story when selling a home but not necessarily your lifestyle or your story. Decorating is all about personal style and telling your story to guests and as a reminder to yourself. When you are staging a home for sale, it can’t be taste specific. Of course, staging must include style but a more general style that can appeal to wider audience with color palettes that are appealing to both men and women. When you don’t grasp this big difference between the two then you probably won’t be able to sell your house as quickly as you’d like.

The writer of the article puts the difference most simply when stating that “staging is about strategic editing and depersonalizing, rather than decorating and personalizing.”
