The Historic Charm of Encinitas

Founded in 1883

California’s first highway was constructed in the late 18th century and called by the name “El Camino Real”. The north-south highway, now known as Highway 101, eventually started bringing commerce and tourism to the quiet beach town of Encinitas in the early 21st century. The very first buildings in this area of Encinitas were constructed in the late 1800’s. After the Lake Hodges Dam started bringing in water in the 1920’s, there was a boom of construction in downtown Encinitas that began the vibrant, artsy community that is still thriving today.

Prosperity and Community

Over a century later, Encinitas is still known as a beach community and as the flower and surf capital of the world. The stretch of Highway 101 that runs through the town marks a bustling downtown Encinitas, which is lined with interesting cafes, shops, and restaurants.

Downtown Encinitas is bordered by Encinitas Boulevard to the north, Vulcan Avenue to the east, K Street to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The population of Encinitas is currently around 63,000 and is about 10,500 in the downtown area.

A Culture of Comfort

Encinitas culture is best described as relaxed. The city is known in particular for its gorgeous beaches, such as Moonlight Beach and Swami’s Beach, which have hosted some of the best surfers in the west coast for both the 20th and 21st century. And what better weather for surfing—the average temperature is a high of 72 degrees, which also makes Encinitas a wonderful place for those with a green thumb. For those who enjoy looking at gardens rather than maintaining them, Encinitas is the home of the San Diego Botanical Gardens and the Self Realization Fellowship Center.

Endless Options for Activity

Encinitas boasts not only some of the most beautiful California beaches, but also a variety of parks for dogs and human alike, historic sites such as La Paloma Theatre, golf courses, and a scenic downtown area. Whether you enjoy bird-watching, surfing, gardening, staying in shape, shopping, or any community events, Encinitas has something to offer just about anyone.
