Homeownership: The American Dream

In a recent poll conducted by Gallup, most Americans either own a home or intend to own in the future.

The dream of owning a home is a reality for the majority of people in the United States; about 56% currently own a home and continue to do so. Additionally, 25% of non-homeowners plan to purchase a home within the next ten years, while only 11% of non-homeowners have no plans to purchase a home in the foreseeable future.

62% of people living in the United States own their primary residence (whether a condo, apartment, home, etc.) with 34% currently renting.

In terms of age groups, Gallup had the following findings:

  • 21% of 18-29 year olds currently own their own home and intend to keep owning in the future, but 68% of this group intend to buy a home within 10 years.
  • 58% of those aged 30 to 49 currently own their own home and 29% of the age group intend to buy in the next decade.
  • For those 50 to 64, 71% currently own their primary residence and an additional 5% of non-homeowners intend to buy in 10 years.

This is the first study that Gallup has conducted to find out how Americans feel about the homeownership so there is no data from previous years to compare it to.
