Maximizing Small Spaces

Trying to organize and decorate a small space can be stressful when there isn’t much to work with. All you need to tackle it is a little creativity and these 11 tips!

1. Create Zones

Think about all the things you do in your home – now, where do you do them? Establish separate zones for those activities. Leave sleeping for the bedroom, eating for the kitchen, and hanging out in the living room.

2. Embrace Change

Finding pieces of furniture that can multi-task will make the room. Find a table that can function as a desk and dining table. Or, get a deep sofa that can be used as a guest bed. You can also get the cushion cubes that serve as a coffee table or seating for extra guests.

3. Trick Your Eye

Create the impression of a larger room by decorating in illusions. Use floor-to-ceiling curtains to make the walls seem taller, see-through furnishings to make it seem wider, and mirrors to expand the space in the overall room.

4. Make It Count

Choose furniture that has high functionality in minimal square footage. Instead of one large coffee table, get two small ones that can be moved around to create more walking room.

5. Use Bigger and Fewer Pieces

Decorating a small space with just a couple large pieces can make the room feel grander. Choose a large bed with some extra storage underneath. While it may be clunky, that’s one less dresser you need in the room.

6. Create Calm Continuity

Soothing, even-toned rooms make a room feel more spacious than it is. Infuse the furnishings with subtle patterns and textures to keep the space from falling flat.

7. Customize Storage

Storage nooks, built-ins, and furniture tailored to your needs can utilize every available inch of space. When it’s a part of the walls, you won’t have to sacrifice square footage.

8. Create a Jewel

Some splurges can help create grandeur vibes in the home and make it feel larger. Give the hallway hanging artwork or library-like books. Statement wallpaper and a unique light fixture is all you need for a powder room.

9. Think Vertical

It’s crazy to think how under-utilized space is between the tops of furniture and the ceiling. Hang things and take bookcases or cabinets all the way up.

10. Create Sight

Tear down walls, enlarge widows, or swap solid doors for glass ones to open up views and connect spaces together.

11. Remember to Edit

You don’t have to display everything and fill every inch. Group collections but give them room to breathe. Nothing makes a room feel smaller than clutter.
