How to Stay Physically and Mentally Active Indoors

A lot of states have issued lock-downs in a bid to halt the spread of the coronavirus. But orders to stay indoors and avoid people has led to echoes of boredom and frustration. The lack of mental and physical stimulation has left many people going crazy!

Luckily, there are still plenty of ways to get your body moving and your mind thinking while diligently following stay-at-home orders.

Stay Physically Active

The key to avoiding tedious, mind-numbing workouts is to vary the types of exercises you do! Switching up your exercises can also help you obtain overall physical health!

  • Stretches: A great way to start the day includes stretching. Light yoga moves and stretching exercises can positively benefit you by improving your circulation and increasing your range of motion!
  • Run/Jog: You don’t have to risk bumping into other people when you run or jog! You could jog or run up and down your driveway or from one end of your home to the other.
  • Use Your Stairs: If your home has stairs, you can do more than simply climb up and down! Incorporate some reverse lunges, stair dips, mountain climbs, and more!
  • Use Weights: No matter what body part you want to focus on, there’s a way to include weights. Adding weight to any basic physical exertion can improve your posture, help you gain bone density, and improve cardiovascular health.
  • Watch and Move: There are plenty of exercises you can do while you watch Tiger King or some other TV show. If your show has ad breaks, you could easily improve your physical health within that time!

Stay Mentally Active

Boost your mental health by trying new things and actively engaging different areas of your brain!

  • Play Math Games: As calculators are now a reliable tool, a lot of people are no longer used to doing math. Math games can be fun and they force your brain to actively solve problems.
  • Learn a New Language: Duolingo is a free app that helps you learn a new language through daily exercises. If you simply want to strengthen your proficiency in a language, you can!
  • Use Your Non-Dominant Hand: A good mental exercise, and a way to become ambidextrous, is to use your non-dominant hand! Try writing or doing your daily tasks with your other hand.
  • Learn to Play an Instrument: Memorizing music notes and learning to play an instrument can improve your memory and the way your brain processes information. If you have an iPad, you could easily learn to play piano!
  • Meditate: Meditating is more than just sitting down and breathing. It’s a mental and physical activity that can help reduce stress and anxiety. Reflection can also help individuals pinpoint aspects of their life they wish to improve upon for better overall happiness.
