How to Tip Your Movers in Encinitas

Etiquette for tipping correctly is a touchy subject for any circumstances, especially when making the decision to tip your movers in Encinitas.

If you are someone who is moving, you are putting a lot of faith in professional movers because you are entrusting your personal possessions to people who are practically strangers. and you may not even be introduced to them before they start taking your belongings and loading them into a truck.

Movers can be considered to be a part of the service trade, but there is so much more riding on their job performance. If you are at diner getting breakfast and the server drops your toast, they can go back to the kitchen and get another order of toast. A lot more is at stake when a mover drops and breaks a family heirloom or drags furniture across the wood floor.

We don’t typically view movers as a service professionals, but they certainly are and deserve proper etiquette to be treated as such. Even though they are being paid to provide a service to haul your belongings from one place to another, they could be worthy of receiving extra recognition for a job well done.

Moving can literally be a back breaking job, so you want to make sure there are cool beverages available to your moving crew, a designated bathroom for their use, as well as hand sanitizer and disposable paper towels (to make sure your linens and other items are safe from moving dirt/grime). You may also want to identify a place outside where smoking is permitted.

According to John Bisney, a spokesman for the American Moving and Storage Association, there is really no set rule in regards to tipping your movers.

“Opinions on [tipping] are varied,” Bisney said. “One mover said the industry standard was 5%, which is pretty reasonable – if a crew of two movers move you for $500-$750, you might tip a total of $25 to $40, or $10 to $20 for each mover depending on the quality of the move.”

It really comes down to your own discretion on how much to tip. View how carefully your items were moved into your new home and adjust your tip up or down depending on the level of service provided. Also, when tipping movers, divide the cash equally and hand each mover the same amount individually.
