There are many things people look for when buying a new home in Encinitas, but taking the time to learn about the various neighborhoods around potential homes is an important factor to keep in mind. Recently, realestate.com posted a list of 5 things to consider when choosing a neighborhood that I feel is worth sharing with my readers.

1. Find the Crime Rate

Feeling safe and secure in your new home is important, so before making any decisions you should look into the crime rate of the neighborhood. You can easily find statistics on an area’s crime rate by using websites like city-data.com and spotcrime.com. These sites will give you statistics and break down how your neighborhood compares to others throughout the country.

2. Consider the Future

When you look for a new home, don’t just think about your immediate needs and wants. Think about what your life will be like in the future. Do you plan on having children? Are you thinking about changing careers and possibly working further away? Will your teenage children be moving out in a few years?

Keeping future developments in mind will allow you cater your housing search to your long-term needs.

3. How Long is the Commute to Work?

Distance to work is a major selling point for many people when looking for a new home. Keep your daily commute in mind when choosing a neighborhood, and avoid greatly lengthening your daily trips. It’s also a good idea to drive the route you plan to take, to make sure your new commute is manageable. Just because the GPS says your drive will only take 20 minutes, in rush hour traffic it could be considerably longer.

4. What Amenities are Close by?

One of the exciting parts of moving to a new neighborhood is exploring all of the new shops and services that are now nearby. If you have need of specific amenities, such as day care, Laundromats, or a decent pizza place, keep them in mind when choosing a neighborhood.

5. Sights, Sounds, and Smells

A new neighborhood means learning to adjust to new surroundings. Visit the neighborhood you are considering moving to during both the day and night, and let your senses have a say in the move! You may find things like allergens, disruptive children, and other things you should be aware of.
