Remodeling your house is a great way to make your home your own, and add a personal and lasting touch. But finding a good remodeler can be difficult. Before you open the yellow pages and pick a remodeler at random, there are a few things you should consider.
Know what you Want
Before looking for a professional remodeler, know what work you want done. Look through design magazines and websites, and collect pictures to give your remodeler a clear idea of what you want. You also need to think about how the work will affect your family’s traffic patterns throughout the house. You may dream about having an island countertop in your kitchen, but how will it affect the overall flow of the room? You will also want to determine how much you are willing to spend on the remodel. Keeping these things in mind will make communicating with your remodeler much easier.
Research
There may be dozens of different remodelers in the area, and it’s impossible to judge their quality based on advertisements. Seeking out referrals is the best way to find out if a remodeler stands out above the rest. Ask your friends and family members, check popular sites like Yelp, and even see if your realtor has any recommendations. Some things to focus your questions on include:
- Cost of the actual work vs. estimated cost
- Did the contractor communicate well?
- Was the jobsite clean and safe for family members and pets?
- Were they easy to get in contact with?
- How would you rate the overall quality of their work?
Give them a Background Check
Once you’ve narrowed in on a few prospective remodelers, it’s time to give them a bit of a background check. Check with consumer protection agencies, as well as the licensing agency, to see if any complaints have been filed against the remodelers. You can also verify that they have necessary licenses and registrations.
Interview your Remodeler
Now that you’ve narrowed your search to a few promising candidates, it’s time to call the remodelers. Think of this like a job interview, and you’re the hiring manager. Ask for some references from previous clients, and find out if they have any photos from previous jobs. If the remodeler can provide these without much convincing, there’s a good chance you’ll be dealing with someone who stands behind their work.
Now that you’ve gotten all the information you need, you can make an informed final decision and hire the right remodeler.
