Giving Tuesday in Encinitas

The end of the year is the time that those with homes in Encinitas and, indeed Americans in general, give back. People with homes in Encinitas and across the nation choose to give at the end of the year in order to achieve write-offs on taxes. After a solid week focused on consumption, Giving Tuesday is an excellent way to cleanse the palette, so to speak.

According to a study conducted in 2010, approximately 93% of donors give during the year-end season, which is why #GivingTuesday has been placed toward the end of the year right after Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Giving Tuesday was started by the 92nd Street Y in New York and since it’s formation has enlisted the support of over 800 partners from nonprofits like the United Way to corporations like Microsoft to social media partners like Mashable.

While #GivingTuesday won’t be the only day that we use to provide charitable donations, it is a good opportunity to jumpstart end-of-year giving. In order to make the most of your donations on Giving Tuesday here are a few roadblocks that you can avoid in your giving:

  • Don’t Neglect the Research – Even if you are planning to give to a charity highly-recommended by a friend, make sure that you do your own research regarding it. Find out how the charity goes about furthering the cause you support and make sure that it is reputable. If you plan to write off your donation on your taxes make absolutely sure that the charity has 501 (c)(3) status.
  • Don’t Succumb to Emotional Pitches – If you encounter solicitors at your door or marketers on your phone, don’t make a donation in the moment. Get their information instead of providing them with yours and do your research on the organization. Many people have become victims of identity theft and fraud as a result of succumb to a particularly emotional pitch.
  • Don’t Overdiversify Your Donations – Concentrating your charity cash will not only help the cause you choose to support better, but it will also save you from receiving appeals year after year from a multitude of different agencies requesting another annual donation.
