The process may be simpler and more straightforward than you might think.

Becoming a Real Estate Agent in California

The real estate market is insanely competitive. Becoming a real estate agent or Realtor in California can seem like a daunting process, but it doesn’t have to be! Before you can start the process of either career, you will need to meet a few prequalifying factors:

  • You Must be At Least 18 Years of Age or Older
  • You Must Be a California Resident, Otherwise You Will Need to Start an Out of State Application

Start the Process to Become a Real Estate Agent in California

Once you’ve met the prequalifying factors, the process to become a real estate agent or Realtor can be straightforward. If you have a degree in real estate, you can skip this process and become a broker. However, without a degree, you will need to go through this process.

To become a real estate agent in California, you will need to go through these four steps:

  1. Complete the Required Hours: A hopeful real estate agent in California must complete the required, 135 hours of school before they can receive their license. These hours are split into 45 hours for each category of learning. The categories are: real estate principles, practices, and finances.
  2. Pass the Exam: Once your schooling is complete, you will need to take an exam. You have two attempts to pass, but you will need at least a 70% on the exam to pass.
  3. Find a Sponsoring Broker: If you have passed your exam, the final step is to find a real estate broker that will sponsor you. This broker will help you launch your career, and they need you just as much as you need them!
  4. Finish the Application: After all of these steps are completed, the last step is to finish your application! The state will review it and notify you of their decision. 


How Much Does it Cost to Become a Realtor in California?

Typically, it will cost about $900 for agents in California. The exam has a fee and there is an additional licensing fee as well. The entire process may take up to six months! Once you have your real estate license and start building your career, you could be well on your way to becoming a Realtor in California.
