Selling a home is more than just a financial transaction. For most people, strong emotional attachments can form after spending years living in the same home. If you are not emotionally ready to sell, it can potentially sabotage your plans. I’ve seen sellers turn down reasonable offers, scrutinize the care potential buyers would give to the home and even back out at the last minute because they were not ready.
Before you invest time and energy into trying to sell your home, you must make sure you and your family are emotionally ready to move on.
Acknowledge Your Feelings
One mistake many emotionally-attached sellers make is pretending that their home is just a piece of property. Ignoring your emotional attachment to your home is the worst thing you can do, and won’t resolve your concerns. Instead, embrace your feelings. Accept that while you spent years of your life turning a house into a home, it is time to move on. This will make the process much easier on you.
Make Sure Everyone is on the Same Page
As families go through the process of selling their homes, it is not uncommon for people’s feelings to change. You may think everyone is ready to move on, but emotions often outweigh reason. Having an open and honest dialog with your family throughout the process is important. Taking the time to make sure everyone is on the same page can prevent hurt feelings and resentment down the road.
Take Your Time
If you are having trouble emotionally detaching yourself from your home, take things at your own pace. You may feel pressured to list the home immediately, but that can make the situation worse. Instead, give yourself the time you need to process the changes. Even a few extra days to mentally prepare can make all the difference in the world.
Get the Support of a Good Realtor
A good realtor is someone who will help you through every stage of your home sale, and that includes emotional support. Don’t be afraid to voice your concerns to your realtor. A good realtor will help you see the benefits of moving on, and can help make the process easier to bear.
