How to Tell that You’re Ready to Sell

In the past, I’ve talked about how selling a home is an emotional event, and should not be rushed into until you are ready. But how do you know when you are ready? While everyone processes things differently, there are a few telltale signs that you are ready to move on from your current home. If you find yourself playing out the scenarios listed below, congratulations! You are ready to sell your home.

You Browse Available Listings in Your Free Time

When you are considering selling your home, it’s not uncommon to thumb through listings in the local paper just out of curiosity. But do you obsessively spend hours browsing listings online? Real estate surfing can be addictive, and it can be easy to lose track of time as you pour over listings for the perfect find. You may think it’s just research, but it could also be your subconscious telling you that it’s time to commit.

You Are Highly Aware of Every For Sale Sign

Have you ever noticed that when you have something on your mind, you tend to see it everywhere you look? The same thing happens to many people when they are excitedly looking for a home. While you’re driving, does every for sale placard stand out like a neon sign? Do you find yourself rubbernecking every time you pass by an open house? These are good indicators that you are ready to move on.

“Shrinking Home Syndrome”

One telling sign that your emotional investment in your home is fading is developing “shrinking home syndrome.” Once you have begun longing for a larger home with more space, your current home can start to feel downright tiny. It’s almost as if your current home is shrinking before your very eyes. This condition was hilariously illustrated on the television show How I Met Your Mother:

If your once roomy home has begun making you feel claustrophobic, you may be ready to make the leap into a larger place.
